South Korea¡¯s global leading tech giant Samsung Electronics¡¯ active matrix OLED (organic light-emitting diode) output has surpassed 200 million units.
The daily production of the hybrid display technology was more than 100,000 units since its first mass production in January 2007. Samsung Mobile Display (SMD), which is responsible for producing OLED displays, topped 100 million units 52 months
after its first production in 2007 and it took only 11 months to add another 100 million units.
Samsung controls 97 percent of the global OLED market as of the first quarter of this year. SMD runs one 4.5-generation
line for OLED production in Cheonan and one 5.5-generation line in Tangjeong.
Initial demands for Samsung¡¯s AMOLED(active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) came from premium feature phones, MP3s and other small-sized devices and the success of its Galaxy smartphone series increased the demand sharply.
The global AMOLED market is expected to grow by more than 60 percent a year by 2015, said market researcher
