Desalination Plants

[Desalination Plants]
Known for delivering advanced and reliable solutions, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is one of the few companies in the world that has proprietary technologies for all three desalination types: Multi-Stage Flashing (MSF), Multi-Effect Distillation (MED), and Reverse Osmosis (RO).

Commanding more than 40% of the world¡¯s desalination plant market, the company has delivered its plants mainly to the Middle East. However, it is aiming to expand its water business in markets such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, and North Africa, Doosan is actively utilizing its global network of regional branch offices and subsidiaries to listen to its clients¡¯ needs and deliver the most optimal water solutions.

Striving to become the ¡°Global Leader in Power & Water,¡± the company has so far built over 680 nuclear, thermal, combined-cycle, and hydro power plants as well. It is fast becoming a top EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) contractor in the infrastructure field.

Currently, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Doosan Heavy) is aggressively pushing ahead with its growth strategies. As part of these, the company is planning to supply boilers for the Unit 5 and Unit 6 of the Yeongheung Thermal Power Plant.
Units 5 and 6 of the power plant, slated for completion in late 2014, will have the capacity to produce 870 megawatts of electricity for the Seoul metropolitan area. The boiler and turbine from the company are two pillars of thermal power generation. The boiler generates steam at a high temperature and pressure, and the steam eventually powers the turbine to generate electricity.

Doosan Heavy has know-how on operating power plants. Running an 800MW power facility, in particular, requires a high level of technology and operation experience.

Doosan Heavy is also the supplier of boilers for Units 3 and 4 of the Yeongheung power plant. Also, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is speeding up penetration into India¡¯s power generation market, while also mulling establishing a local power company in India.

According to foreign sources, Doosan¡¯s India-based company will most likely specialize in the manufacturing of boiler or turbine equipment. Doosan¡¯s enthusiasm for the Indian market is explained by India¡¯s huge potential. India is expected to add new coal-based thermal power stations with aggregate capacity of 160 GW in the next 10 years.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will also be building a wind farm in Scotland to further advance its wind energy business. This investment will span over the next 10 years, during which Doosan will inject 170 million pounds sterling ($274.7 million) into the construction of an R&D center, wind turbine plant, and wind farm. Doosan, which successfully acquired an international certificate for its three megawatts (MW) wind turbine system, also plans to develop a large
scale turbine of 6MW.

By building a local off shore wind farm in Scotland, Doosan hopes to dip its toes into North Sea¡¯s wind energy market, which is projected to host 40 GW wind farms by 2020. This is the impetus behind the company¡¯s efforts to develop a turbo wind turbine of 6MW, which it plans to complete by 2013 and start commercial production by 2015. Doosan¡¯s earlier 3MW turbine system was certified by DEWI-OCC, an offshore certification center based in Germany.
