I am an operations manager for a speech impairment research center. Our various activities revolve around research of speech- and communication-related disorders as well as development for therapeutic and technological solutions to address the numerous medical, social and professional aspects of speech impairment and disabilities. Naturally, we have a network of experts around the world involved with these studies and projects, like any other academic or professional organization. To manage this network we have relied on a variety of IT and communication tools widely available in the market, from simple messenger systems to more advanced telecommunication networks. Recently, however, we felt the need to add a dedicated Internet-based video relay and communication system. We needed a system that could cater to the basic communication needs of organization as well as take advantage of video relay services around the world.

A Video Relay Service (VRS), also sometimes known as a Video Interpreting Service, is a video telecommunication service that allows deaf, as well as hearing- and speech-impaired individuals, to communicate over video telephones and similar technologies with hearing people in real-time, via a sign-language interpreter. There have been significant improvements in video call quality of service due to better technology as well as the availability of high speed Internet and later 3G networks.

In searching for video communication devices that would suit our needs, I visited the International Broadcasting and Communication Conference in 2010 and took part in a media event that introduced a number of communication equipment and software. One of the companies that caught my attention was SBN Tech that demonstrated a new IP video phone built on an Android platform. According to the demonstration, the use of the Android operating system allows the user to utilize popular applications such as mobile Skype, as well as take advantage of easy integration with Google Mail. Any app that can be used on an Android phone of course can be used on the video phone, including Twitter, Flickr, Picassa, Internet radios, and thousands more.

In addition, the device is designed to support VRS, which would enable us to vastly improve communication between our various staff members who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech impaired as well as our partners and volunteers around the world. While traditional video conferencing systems as well as Android-based video communication application support simple video calling functions, a dedicated device such as SBN Tech's video terminal is perfect for organizations and individuals who need access to fast, reliable video communication as well as easy integration with existing VRS networks in the United States and Europe. The company also offers apps that can be installed on Android phones as well as iOS systems such as iPhones and iPads and used alongside the video terminals.

The IP video phone comes with a 10.2 inch LCD screen with a 800x480 resolution, a convenient graphic user interface, x-x-x-embedded Web browser, and SD card slot for more storage memory, built in Wi-Fi and optional Bluetooth, external video and audio input/output sockets, and of course the camera unit and microphone that enables video communication. The form factor is small and light, resembling electronic picture x-x-x-frames.

Founded in 2004, SBN Tech has focused on developing communication devices that take advantage of broadband networks and data communication, based on strong multimedia capabilities. The company has also created its own dedicated server for VRS to aid communication for the deaf, as well as the hard-of-hearing and speech impaired. SBN Tech develops products and solutions for video conferencing, remote healthcare, e-learning and online shopping, and remote surveillance. While the company began as a dedicated developer of video phones, which still remains one of the company's core products, SBN Tech has recently been diversifying its products and development into communication and data management devices for a wide range of applications in numerous different industries.
