[Samsung SDI, to Top 1 bn Cell Production]
Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of the South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group, will surpass annual production of one billion cells by the end of this year, a new milestone to be achieved by the world¡¯s largest secondary-battery producer. Samsung SDI is estimated to churn out more than one billion cells ithin this year, according to a report released by Japan¡¯s Institute of
Information Technology (IIT).
With the production, Samsung SDI will be expected to continue its arket leadership for two consecutive years. The production will likely e larger than the combined output of Japan¡¯s Panasonic Group. In the second quarter, Samsung SDI produced over 10 million more ells than Panasonic, representing a market share of 24.54%. Including anyo¡¯s output, Panasonic produced 254.6 million cells, accounting for 23.58%.
Samsung SDI elbowed out Japan¡¯s Sanyo for the first time last year in the small secondary battery market and has maintained its leadership along with growing demand from Korean device manufacturers. Compared with last year, Samsung SDI expanded its output by 31.2%.
Samsung SDI has historically been at the forefront of Korea¡¯s display business for the past 40 years. Samsung SDI started and expanded the business from vacuum/picture tubes to LCD, PDP, and AMOLEDs. Despite lacking resources, infrastructure, and technology to evolve into an electronics industry, Samsung SDI pioneered the development and research for the display business industry in KOREA.
Since 2000, Samsung SDI started to develop lithium ion battery (LIB) technology as a new business division and achieved world #1 ranking within a very short period of time. Therefore, LIB business became a successor to its already thriving Display business. Through these sectors, Samsung SDI¡¯s flagship business has been growing strongly and solidly.
As Samsung SDI has shifted core business model and infrastructure from its display industry to renewable energy, SDI has continued to pioneer and become a world leader for Korea¡¯s new energy industry. Nowadays, the next lithium ion battery business in Samsung SDI is rapidly extending its territory over digital mobile devices, Electric Vehicles and ESS (Energy Storage Systems).
