South Korea-based display maker Samsung Display retained top place in the global small and mid-sized panel market in the first quarter (Q1) this year, displays used for making smartphones and tablets.
Market research firm DisplaySearch said recently Samsung¡¯s global sales of nine-inch or smaller display panels totaled $2.24 billion Q1 this year, up 28.5 percent year-on-year from $1.75 billion of the same period last year. Samsung Display gained a 23.5 percent market share in Q1, similar to 23.6 percent of a year ago.
The display maker remained on top as the ¡°Galaxy S3,¡± a smartphone embedded with the company¡¯s organic lightemitting diode (OLED) panel, consistently sold well. Samsung Display has a 98 percent market share in the small and mid-sized OLED panel segment.
Samsung Electronics re-emerged as the largest seller of mobile phone in the first three months this year, after losing the position to Apple in Q4 last year. LG Display, a leading large display panel maker, saw its sales of small and mid-sized panels spiral on the back of resurgent sales of LG Electronics¡¯ smartphones including the ¡°Optimus G¡± featuring in-plane switching (IPS) LCD panel.
Small and mid-sized display sales of LG Electronics surged 83.1 percent year-on-year to $1.42 billion in Q1 from $772.87 million of a year earlier. As a result, LG Electronics boosted its market share from 10.4 percent to 14.9 percent within a year and overtook Sharp to take the second place in the small and mid-size panel segment.
Sharp posted the third highest market share of 14.8 percent with $1.41 billion sales, followed by Japan Display with $1.16 billion sales (12.2 percent), Chimei Innolux with $765.31 million (8.0 percent), and AU Optronics with $492 million (5.2 percent). The total global sales of small and mid-sized display panels reached $9.53 billion in Q1, up 28.6 percent year-on-year from $7.41 billion of the same period last year.
