Interview - Kim, Yong-Kook, the General Manager of Korea Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMI)

¡°1st KIF will be a great opportunity for Korea to advance as a world-leading machinery industry nation¡±

Q. Please give us a brief overview of the 1st Korea Industry Fair (KIF).

It is the first 100,000sq.m fair in Korea and the opening exhibition for the 2nd KINTEX venue. As a comprehensive machinery exhibition that encompasses all areas of the manufacturing industry, participating companies can forecast new growth industry trends and demands for new products and new technology while visitors can catch the diversification trends of business to become an ideal opportunity to establish new ideas and networks. Considering that it is the largest exhibition ever for comprehensive machineries in Korea, I would like to emphasize once again that it is an ¡°important exhibition that creates a foundation for Asia¡¯s greatest industry fair.¡±

Q. Why was the fair selected as the opening exhibition for 2nd KINTEX venue?

Exhibitions which were skewed mostly in Europe and United States are expanding gradually to Asia and in order to extend the influence of the Korean manufacturing industry, it is important to hold and revitalize exhibitions that provide the keys to international business to develop into an international and beneficial exhibition.

Q. Why is it being held as an integrated exhibition?

Beginning as Korea¡¯s first machinery exhibition in 1977, Korea Machinery Fair (KOMAF) is holding its 18th event this year and I believe that it has grown together with the development of the machinery business and industry. With the machinery industry developing into a trade surplus industry to become a pillar of support for the Korean economy, KOMAF has a 34-year tradition
serving as a vanguard for this machinery-related specialized international trade exhibition.

Korea¡¯s manufacturing industry, which strengthens the nation¡¯s competitiveness as an export-oriented industry, is highly dependent on foreign sourced technology and raw materials. Most companies have high technology level but weak export marketing capability and the reality is that they are thus limited in their ability to counter ¡°Global Sourcing.¡± Given Korea¡¯s industry structure where growth of small and mid-sized companies directly affects the national industrial foundation, the necessity of exhibitions that seek mutual growth of the machinery industry through convergence/multi-integration between manufacturing industries has been rising and in this regard, the Korea Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMI) hopes to expand high-level export marketing support policy by holding the ¡°Korea Machinery Fair¡± and ¡°1st Korea Industry Fair¡± which is Korea¡¯s greatest comprehensive machinery integrated exhibition.

Q. How is the attraction of foreign buyers progressing?

We at KOAMI pre-identify buyers requested by participating companies, and to set up effective business meetings during the exhibition, invitations are sent through KOTRA¡¯s Korea Business Center and ¡®export consultation meetings¡¯ are held at the fair to plan for a pin-point method export promotion event and participating companies that invite foreign buyers will be given many benefits. We will do our best to use all channels to secure highly satisfactory foreign buyers and visitors through 5,000 buyers with real purchasing intentions, 18 overseas promotions, 115 private export support centers, 37 related agencies from 24 countries, 98 KOTRA Korea Business Centers, etc. This fair, where trends in domestic/foreign new and latest machinery technology, multiintegration, and convergence can be identified, is not merely an ordinary exhibition.
